The Federal Skilled Trades Class is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade. One of the objectives of the Federal Skilled Trades Class is to meet the demand of skilled trades workers. It is one of the three federal immigration classes covered by the Express Entry application processing system.
Eligibility Requirements
To meet the minimum eligibility criteria to be able to apply to the Federal Skilled Trades Class in Canada, you must:
- Have 2 years of full-time work experience (or its part-time equivalent) in a skilled trade within the period of 5 years before you apply.
- English, CLB level 5 for speaking and listening, CLB level 4 for reading and writing.
- An offer of full-time employment for the period of at least one year OR a certificate of qualification in your skilled trade that was issued by a Canadian province, federal or territorial authority.
- be able to demonstrate your skills and experience as may be needed by your skilled trade.
Once it has been determined that an applicant meets the minimum eligibility requirements, they must show that they have sufficient settlement funds to support themselves and any dependents after their arrival in Canada. There is no education requirement for this class, however, applicants can earn points and improve their rank in the Express Entry pool by including their education history.
These eligible occupations fall into the accompanying general classes:
- Industrial, electrical and construction trade
- Maintenance and equipment operation trades
- Supervisors and technical occupations in national assets, agriculture and related creation
- Processing, manufacturing and utility Supervisors and central control officials
- Chefs and cooks
- Butchers and bakers
